THE EYES OF THE SLEEPERS:

Cheyenne Accounts of the Washita Attack

By

Peter Harrison
Washita Bronze

Detail from the Ernest Berk sculpture 'Washita' currently located in the County Courthouse at Cheyenne, Oklahoma

Hit the snow running with this new inside view of the well-known conflict.  Although the Little Bighorn is well served by Indian-sourced books, the Washita has mainly been reported as a military encounter.  The Author here takes a view from the valley floor, aided by rare and previously unpublished text and photographs.

Harrison says of the military accounts: ' If you describe only the attack in a chess game, it leads to the presumption that the opposition is similarly ranked against you.'
